I’m 31, I decided not to have kids. Life very recently has started to make more sense for me. That is, for the rest of my time left here. I’ll always struggle to keep my place on top. Honestly believed maybe it gets better but it doesn’t. Your attitude is what actually changes. I’m over the sadness, I’m just focused now on being me.

This was a well prepared and meticulously organized presentation. How I wish Ms. Madman had been around when my son went off to college. Her passion and caring are evident. My son, who had been diagnosed with NVLD in 2004, is thirty three and in graduate school now. At the time of his diagnosis, there was very little information available. Support was limited. He had time accommodations for testing and that was about it. I had little understanding of the nuances and full extent of difficulty this condition would bring him and was at a loss as to how to help him. As he went on to college, I found that his academic success was excellent, but his social skills and relationships really suffered. The same is true to this very day. I was at a loss as to how I could help him, and only recently found your website. I want to thank you for your dedication and for the help you offer both adults with NVLD and their parents. Had you been a resource we could have had access to earlier on, I think my son would have had an easier and happier time. My hope is to continue learning about this uncommon and often overlooked disability so that I can now support my son more knowledgeably as he navigates the affects of this disorder. Thank you so much.

Starting/doing new things is def a problem for me, an adult diagnosed in my early 60s after a lifetime of wondering what’s wrong with me, getting tested as ADHD and cPTSD in middle age, but feeling like there was something else - or additional - going on. I finally went for a third opinion and some extra testing and eval with a neuropsych, and she ID’d the NVLD. So when you think you’re being lazy or procrastinating, remember you may be avoidant due to NVLD. Because you may not cognitively register what’s going on; you may feel sleepy, or grouchy, or you get distracted rather than recognize “Oh, this is a new task or situation, I’m uncomfortable.” Because there’s so little treatment or therapy available for adults - like virtually none - we have to figure it out for ourselves.

Add a verbally abusive raging parent to the mix and you'll understand how terrible my son's life was. NVLD can manifest as profound depression and at 24, deeply depressed and bullied at school and at home by his father, my son with NVLD took his life. Please, please, please don't allow yourself to turn on yourself. I plan to advocate more for others who are struggling with this learning disorder. My son did eventually make friends, get good grades and find work. But it wasn't enough. LOVE YOUR CHILD WITH NVLD!

When she mentioned about the kid telling her daughter about her backpack being in the pink bin and that she was sitting at such and such table, I didn't get it either until she explained. I am 32 years old. Stuff like that oftentimes still goes over my head unless something isn't explicitly stated. If someone said that to me, I would have been very confused about why someone was so enthusiastic about where their backpack was and where they were sitting. 🤣🤣🤣

I wasn’t diagnosed with NVLD until I was 41 years old, these “testimonies” sound so much like me it’s scary. I was always the lost, confused and disoriented child in school. As an adult nothing changed, still lost confused and disoriented. As far as driving I could always end up an accidental tourist! As far as math is concerned, I’m lucky I’m an adult now so I never have to do it again! As far as picking up on non verbal cues…. I’m not so sure about that one?

But right through from grade 4, i have had something, but the school absolutely refused to diagnose. I don't have high school and i dropped out twice and finished in grade 11 with no major subjects. There was all kinds of bullying and verbal abuse throughout the years that set me back years. My siblings get angry and everything. Now we are at the point of going for diagnosis.
